In 2014, I had the privilege of delivering the keynote address at the California Association of College Book Sellers conference. At that time, college bookstores were grappling with a significant shift in their business landscape. Numerous online organizations were encroaching upon their revenue, casting uncertainty over their future presence on university campuses.

Approached to address this critical juncture, I crafted a speech tailored to the specific challenges faced by college bookstores. However, the principles presented therein are applicable to a wide range of organizations, teams, and families.

These notes serve as a concise summary of the speech.

  1. It’s Going to Be Okay: While it may not always be the case, maintaining a positive attitude is crucial. Your efforts will contribute to a better outcome. Success begins with your personal determination, and your team will follow suit.

  2. Express Anger, Then Move On: Workplaces often consume more of our time than our homes, making colleagues extended family. It is essential to maintain harmony in such situations. Even if you may harbor feelings of resentment, it is important to quickly move past them.

  3. Embrace Your Identity Beyond Your Title: Your worth extends beyond your professional title. If your title were to change, your identity would remain intact. Cultivate a willingness to listen to ideas from the most junior members of your team.

  4. Believe in Yourself: Take ownership of your actions and decisions. Seeking forgiveness is preferable to asking for permission. Even if you encounter setbacks, remember that you have made a valiant effort.

  5. Some Arguments Are Worth Losing: Certain decisions may not be entirely win-win, and some mistakes can be rectified. However, others may be unavoidable, and it is important to learn to live with them.

  6. Facts Are Subjective: Not everyone will share your perspective on a well-made decision. Conduct thorough research, verify information, and formulate a plan before taking action.

  7. Make Your Own Decisions: Establish clear boundaries and make decisions that align with your values. Avoid encroaching on others’ property or responsibilities.

  8. Pay Attention to the Small Details: The minutiae of your business, such as maintaining a clean and functional restroom, working microwave, pens, and chairs, can significantly impact the overall experience for your customers.

  9. Share Credit, but Accept Responsibility: When your efforts yield positive outcomes, share the credit. Conversely, acknowledge and accept responsibility for any shortcomings.

  10. Practice Kindness: Your words and actions have a profound impact on others. Kindness fosters healing and positive relationships.

  11. Discover Your Purpose: Reflect on your motivations and the direction you want to take your business. Ensure that your stakeholders are aware of your aspirations.

  12. Fear is never an appropriate guiding principle, as it can hinder creativity and hinder personal growth. Seek out those who love and trust you, and allow only them to influence your life. Always prioritize their counsel over others.

  13. Positive energy is contagious and can significantly impact the environment. A positive attitude releases good energy, which is essential for effective leadership.
